I had an amazing weekend I managed to catch up with my old high school mates, and we even went on a road trip down to Margaret river, -where we managed to get extremely lost in the Yallingyup maze! Busselton where we stopped for fish and chips and gelato Cowaramup – to take pictures with plastic cows! lol and to visit the candy story ‘Candy moo’ (which was delicious by the way) it was perfect timing as they were making some honeycomb candy at the time and we all got to try some when just cooked, warm, sticky and delicious. We also caught up in Bunbury and last but not least Collie – lol I know a little odd and if you’ve ever heard of Collie you’ll be thinking WTF is that on the road trip list but actually two of my mates live there so it’s where we crashed in the end. Then we found out that uni results had been released early and YAY I passed Normal Systems- thank goodness!!! My brother managed to do amazingly (HDs all the way! Congrats bro- lol I wonder if you’ll ever read that?) and my family and I even had a celebratory lunch on Sunday for it. Unfortunately the lunch was ………..how do I put this nicely, it was like eating
Knee deep in s***
Seriously over rated. This was one of the most disappointing meals I’ve had in a long time. Everything made me hope this would be a fantastic meal but alas, it was not to be. Firstly it was fully booked when we wanted to try it the week before(always a good sign right!), and so we had to make reservations a week in advance, the pictures looked amazing, they seemed to be very accommodating in terms of dietary requirements, and there was no lack of beauty in there surroundings. Even when they brought out the entrees it looked mouthwatering, but looks aren’t everything, and unfortunately this place was hoping prettiness could outshine mmmdeliciousness.
When there we had the choice of either ‘trust the chef’ or a la carte, we went with the later as there was four of us and we wanted a light meal, plus the entire table has to do it and with four of us there it just wasn’t worth the $65 per person.
It really was just a pretty face. The smoked pork belly entree with pineapple chutney, red quinoa and pommery mustard dressing should have been delicious with great supporting elements but the pork in all honesty was dry and the crackle was missing the serious crunch, it was more like the soft crunch of lightly toasted bread then the crackle of peanut brittle. The scallop entree was the same, with the apple and celeriac remoulade being great but the scallops mediocre with crumb overpowering the scallop – (does this mean the scallops weren’t fresh… hmmm who knows but if they are going to mask its flavour like that I certainly wouldn’t trust them!) The mains were the same with the main elements all sucking, my fish was dry, the chicken was dry….I think you get the picture. I mean if they are going to break down the food into tiny pieces just so it looks pretty they need to accommodate the smaller pieces when cooking, I would rather prefer a large juicy piece of succulent fish over pretty dry pieces any day.
Dessert was a waste of time. We ordered the tasting plate to share but whoever cooks here obviously takes no pride in desserts. I mean who allows themselves to serve runny creme brûlée! And a weird lemon cake had a lemon curd (at least I think it was lemon curd) that was just so buttery that it was gross. The rocky road was just way too sweet, I mean I know it normally is sweet- but even my brother who could consume sugar by the bucketful couldn’t eat it. The balance was just off as well, I mean the tiny velvet cakes were great by themselves,- but with a cabernet sorbet and rhubarb that was just too sour, i mean I get that they were trying to keep with the colour scheme but I honestly would have preferred a simple vanilla scoop to counter the rhubarbs sourness, the bitter mulled wine “gravel” however matched the sorbet perfectly …but nothing else, it really just wasn’t though out.
This lunch was such a waste, it had the potential to be brilliant with some great elements, but with too much focus on the pretty it just wasn’t there. In other words for that price tag it’s not worth it, and I’d never go back.
